William Lindsey Farm, 3016 Holland-Sylvania Rd.

The Lindsey farm was located on the southeast corner of Central Avenue and the Maumee Road (now Holland-Sylvania). In 1875 the land was owned by Robert Freeman. Lindsey purchased the land between 1875 and 1888.

Lindsey was the son of William Sr and Mary Agnes Lindsey. Before moving to Lucas County Lindsey lived in Franklin and Ross, Ohio. He moved to Lucas County, likely on the mid to late 1870s. In 1888 he married Emma Claretta Colburn. They had one son, Harold W. Lindsey.

1888 map shows the 30 acres owned by William Lindsey.

After purchasing the land Lindsey built a farm house facing the Maumee Road and started farming his thirty acres.

A map from 1900 shows the Lindsay farm with a small black square noting the location of the Lindsey home.

In 1903 Lindsey married Mary Ann Cory. They had four children: Wesley, Leroy, Iva and Ralph. It’s assumed that all the children worked the farm over the years. In the 1920 Census the family was still living on the farm, but it appears they moved before 1930.

In the 1930 Census the Lindsey family was living at 6635 Erie Street in the City of Sylvania.

Records suggest that the Lindsey farm land was sold in 1948 to Alphonse Glowacki.

In 1958 the Glowacki Brothers petitioned to have the property zoned from residential to commercial. Later that same year Shell Oil Company purchased the northwest corner of the former Lindsey farm and opened up a fuel station.

In 1971 the Toledo West Shopping Center was built on the old Lindsey farm. The shopping center included a Woolco, Jo-Ann Fabrics, Lane Drug Store (later People’s Drug Store), and Kroger (on the far east end).

Today the old Lindsey farm is a Walmart. Or perhaps a Walmart parking lot.
