The Kmart Dirt Mounds

Back in the ’80s there was a small cluster of dirt mounds behind the Kmart at 5956 Central Avenue. Perhaps about five to ten of them, about four or five feet high and maybe ten feet in diameter. Over the years vegetation and small trees grew on them.

So, what’s the significance of those anthropogenic (human-made) mounds of dirt? I spent time in them. I rode my BMX bike on them. They are simply included among the pleasant memories of places from those long gone days.

Historical aerial images show those mounds were created when Ted’s Pure Oil was being remodeled as TST in 1980.
